What the employer wrote

Riot Games was established in 2006 by entrepreneurial gamers who believe that player-focused game development can result in great games. In 2009, Riot released its debut title  League of Legends  to critical and player acclaim. As the most played video game in the world, over 100 million play every month. Players form the foundation of our community and it’s for them that we continue to evolve and improve the  League of Legends  experience.

We’re looking for humble but ambitious, razor-sharp professionals who can teach us a thing or two. We promise to return the favor. Like us, you take play seriously; you’re passionate about games. We embrace those who see things differently, aren’t afraid to experiment, and who have a healthy disregard for constraints.

That's where you come in.

As a Narrative Designer , you are the champion of all things story and delivering key narrative elements to players. You will bring your passion for narrative and editorial to internal and external teams ensuring that dialogue, script, and character bios are consistent, compelling, and exciting when delivered to players.

As a Senior Narrative Designer on the Unpublished R&D Product , you will partner closely with design and discipline leads to translate ambitious creative visions into actionable and scalable narrative designs. You will contribute hands-on to creating, prototyping, and tuning narrative experiences while helping establish the frameworks and standards that guide the team's narrative work. You will report into the Game Director of the team.

Responsibilities:

• Establish methodologies for weaving story elements through various gameplay mechanics and systems.

• Partner with design leads to craft a vision for the overall narrative experience.

• Seek opportunities for innovative narrative design solutions within the genre.

• Define narrative frameworks and quality standards.

• Prototype and validate narrative ideas to test readability, emotional clarity, and production viability.

• Create and tune narrative content in partnership with cross-disciplinary teams.

• Identify opportunities to improve narrative design approaches throughout development.

Required Qualifications:

• 6+ years of professional narrative design experience in the game industry.

• Experience leading significant portions of narrative design and content production for at least one game title or shipped narrative product.

• Professional experience writing and adapting narrative content.

• Experience integrating narrative design with gameplay and broader game design.

• Experience collaborating with cross-disciplinary teams across multiple stages of development.

• Fluency in Mandarin Chinese.

Desired Qualifications:

• Experience working in a lead Narrative Design role.

• Experience with early-stage game development and prototyping.

• Leadership experience providing feedback and navigating creative disagreements across disciplines.

• Fluency in spoken and written English.

For this role, you'll find success through craft expertise, a collaborative spirit, and decision-making that prioritizes the delight of players. We will be looking at your past studies, experience, and your personal relationship with games. If you embody player empathy and care about players' experiences, this could be your role!
