What the employer wrote

Overview

Mesh is hiring its first dedicated Compliance Officer for its Japan entity. This is a foundational role. You will not inherit a function; you will build one: policies, procedures, and controls designed for a crypto payments infrastructure business operating under Japanese regulation. You will work closely with outside counsel and Mesh’s global compliance team, and you will be the person regulators, partners, and internal stakeholders come to first on anything compliance-related in Japan. The role can start as full-time or as a fractional engagement, depending on the right person.

What You'll Do

- Design, implement and maintain Mesh Japan’s compliance program, including AML/CFT, KYC and Travel Rule obligations.

- Serve as the primary point of contact for regulatory engagement and licensing-related workstreams in Japan.

- Liaise with outside counsel on regulatory filings and ongoing obligations.

- Build policies and procedures fit for a crypto payments infrastructure business operating in Japan, not adapted from a generic template.

- Track regulatory developments in Japan’s digital-asset and payments space and advise leadership on what they mean for Mesh.

- Partner with Mesh’s global compliance, legal and risk teams to keep Japan practices aligned with company-wide standards.

- Support onboarding and due diligence for new partners and clients in Japan.

- Prepare compliance reporting for the board and for regulators as required.

Who You Are

- 5+ years in compliance, regulatory affairs or legal roles within financial services, payments, or crypto and digital assets in Japan.

- Strong working knowledge of Japan’s regulatory framework for payments and/or crypto-asset businesses.

- Experience working with or reporting to the FSA or a comparable regulator, directly or through counsel.

- Experience with financial license applications with Regional Finance Bureaus (RFB) and the FSA.

- Business-level fluency in Japanese and English; native Japanese speaker preferred.

- Comfort building a function from the ground up with limited initial resources.

- High attention to detail and strong written communication for policy and regulatory documents.

The estimated base salary for this position is¥15,00,000 to ¥30,000,000. The compensation range provided may span multiple career levels and will be narrowed during the interview process based on factors including a candidate's experience, skills, qualifications, and geographic location. The base salary range listed excludes commission (if applicable), equity, and benefits. The pay range represents the minimum and maximum target for new-hire compensation. Actual compensation may vary and may be higher or lower depending on individual circumstances.
